Cool S#*t

Ever wonder where the hell fashion is heading?
Crystal ball a bit hazy?

Sporting a ‘look’ or wearing a label head-to-toe is fast losing favour, and so the rise of all things avant-garde has become the order of the day.

With this global trend of eclecticism, designers and retailers are finding it almost impossible to get the mix right, affirming the need to be unique more than ever.

Of all the fashion related product categories, eyewear has long been controlled by the big licensed brands and their advertising dollar, so this move towards independent thinking with consumers is a welcome relief to independent eyewear brands and retailers alike.

Take note of eyewear designers ‘Isson’ and ‘Cutler and Gross’, whose wares sans-logo embellishment rely on unique character styling that modernise and reinvent the wearer.

New S#*t

Pictured above Model KMN-14 is one of the latest designs to come from the boutique frame maker Kame ManNen (Japan).

Specialising in round-eyes and old-school saddle bridges since 1917, family owned and operated frame makers Kame ManNen have been producing specialty hand-made frames with a level of craftsmanship second to none.

Their frames have not only outlived trends but have been known to outlive the wearer.

S#*t Happens

Engaging the world with optical style, flair and innovation over the past 30 years, l.a.Eyeworks creators Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gerhardi have been recognised as some of the most influential women in the optical industry in 2008.

As well as creating unique and innovative frames, Vision Monday credit l.a.Eyewroks for it’s “redefined perceptions with explosive marketing concepts that meld trademark humor, ‘low-brow’ materials, politically-charged messages, and spiritual encouragements.”

You too can be a DEVO!

Rocking right on through from the early 80’s, DEVO’s Bob Mothersbaugh performed recently at Byron Bay’s SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS fronting the festival crowd in the DEVO uniform of a yellow boiler suit and energy-dome hat.

Isson Delivers Old School Values

Inspired by the days when women were fashionably refined and men were tailored yet rough around the edges, the current eyewear trend capturing this old-school sensibility has crossed over to sunglasses and surpassed the oversized, wrap-around and fun festival looks of recent years.

More than just rehashing the staple Wayfarer, the Isson Eyewear 08_09 collection creates avant-garde styling with character and intrigue. Obvious logo embellishment is no longer relevant, making it more about the frame styling and less about the brand name.

This season, Isson Eyewear accentuates femininity with glamorous and funky cats-eye shapes for women. Likewise, masculine and somewhat ostentatious styles for men feature thick-rimmed acetate frames, fusing a nerdy/clumsiness for bold and edgy character looks.

The collection explores colour and textured effects but remains underpinned by classic black and tortoiseshell which was so prevalent in the 50’s and early 60’s.

Retro rivet features embedded in heavy dual-tone frames and combination acetate & metal styles reinforce the collection’s refinement of design ideas, drawing a clearer distinction between Isson’s hand-made work and the mass produced end of town.

Cool S*#t

Eyewear as a defining statement of style has gained more recognition in the past year than it has in the past 2 decades. Wearing optical frames with fake lenses is not new but the trick (previously used by lawyers and doctors wanting to appear more ‘professional and intellectual’) has well and truly found a click with the cool kids, keen to unleash the nerd within.

In the world of optics, long gone are the minimal (rimless) designs and hard, unfriendly angular shape. The 50’s retro-revival in eyewear is soft, curvaceous, arty, bold and at times, a little bow-tie kind of kooky.

Known for their anti-fashion ways, l.a.Eyeworks boldly went where no other dared to go, and now more than 3 years since pushing the grandpa, geek-chic (call it what you like) look, they continue to lead this trend and push boundaries with their amazing collection of hand-made acetate and super dooper titanium frames, inflicting colour and style like no other.

Think Roy Orbison, Malcolm X and Buddy Holly…. Crossed with RuPaul and Andy Warhol (both whom have featured in l.a.Eyeworks campaigns) and you have a colossal collection brimming with personality and style.
